Cotton is a member of the mallow family and most cotton is derived from the species known as Gossypium hirsutum. The plant carries its seeds in a lint-filled capsule or boll, and the material is spun from those fibres.
Cotton makes beautiful, long lasting bags but it is not the most sustainable crop – it needs a little help from pesticides and fertilisers, and there are several genetically-modified varieties. However we can also offer organic cotton bags.
The processing of cotton is a complex multi-stage process, starting with the mechanical separation of the fibre from the seed. The fine fibres are carded and spun before being woven into cotton of various weaves, grades and weights.
